The Living Room Update

Today is February 10, 2017.  I started the preparations to paint the living room.  I washed three of the walls I plan on painting.  I’m not going to paint the whole living room at one time.  There just wouldn’t be anywhere to put all the furniture.  I plastered some on the holes and dents on the walls.

This is what the living room looked like when we first moved in.  Where the treadmill is, that is where the addition was.

This is the living room after I removed the three tier table, the king and queen chairs.  My husband had the addition removed and closed it in.  The addition was in very bad shape.  It was built 25 or 30 years ago.  There is no footings, the cement was just an outline of a square.  In the middle was a carpet, tarps and dirt.  The addition had dropped a foot, the ceiling was sunken in and the floor was rotting.  The smell was terrible and when the wall came down, there were a lot of mice.

This is a different view of the living room.

Today is March 10, 2017, I finished this wall today.  I had run out of paint and wanted to wait until the hardware store had it on sale.

The stairs

Today is March 8, 2017.  I started on the stairs today.  I decided I would put a lighter colour where the brown is.  Then the darker colour where the lighter colour is.  I find when I’m coming down the stairs at night, it is hard to see the stairs properly.

The dogs sleep upstairs so I had to carry them upstairs at night and down in the morning.  It was exhausting with all five dogs!

The Blizzard of March 2017

Today is March 7, 2017.  When we woke up this morning there was a good dump of snow.  Just when the snow was starting to go away.

My husband was going to work this morning at 5:30 when he hit a snow drift.  He said it reached the hood of his truck.  The snow pulled him sideways into the edge of the garden.  He tried getting out but couldn’t.  I woke up at 7:30 and watched from the kitchen window.  He had been using the tractor to clear the driveway, unfortunately he ran out of gas.  Luckily the tractor was behind the truck at that point, so at least he wasn’t blocking the driveway.

I went down to see how he was making out.  He was so cold he was shaking, he doesn’t retain heat well.  He has an illness, Polymyositis.  It is chronic inflammation of the muscles.

We both got into the truck, his boss was coming to take him to work.  Once his boss came I went into the house.  The wind was just wicked, so bone chilling.  His boss was able to pull him out and they left for work.

My husband called me at 2:30 p.m., he couldn’t get onto the grid road.  The highway snow plow pushed the snow onto the grid road.  He was sitting on the side of the highway deciding what to do.  He thought he might have to go back to town.  Luckily a good Samaritan who lives across the highway came to help.  He had a tractor and was able to clear the grid road and do some of our driveway.  My husband once he was home finished clearing the driveway.

A view from the kitchen.

Sylvester is checking out all the snow.

It’s usually pretty flat in this area.

The dogs yard which is also flat usually!

The front of the house, it has big snow drifts.

The wind was really blowing at the front yard.  We can usually see all the way to town.

My car was getting buried.

Today is March 8, 2017.  Here is the aftermath of the blizzard.  My husband was leaving at 5:30 this morning and there was a big snow drift at the end of the driveway.  He tried to pass it but he couldn’t make it.

The wind took most of the snow off of my car.

The driveway is getting cleared.  My husband uses our tractor that has a bucket.  My husband went to work at 5:30 but he couldn’t get down the driveway.  Another big snowdrift had to be cleared.  Our grid road needs to be plowed again, what was cleared yesterday has snowdrifts.

The vegetable garden.

I went outside to take pictures of the snow around 11:30 and I saw a snow plow going by pretty fast.  I thought why are going so fast!  Then I saw another one come down our grid road.  I waved to thank him for doing our road!

The sun is out but it is very cold.

A leak in the toilet tank

Today is March 5, 2017.  Today I was painting the bathroom and I noticed that the toilet tank was leaking on one side.  It stopped for awhile and then it started again but much stronger.  The other side started leaking as well.  I had buckets under each side but I couldn’t understand why the tank started leaking.  I just hoped the tank didn’t have a crack in it.

I googled a leaking toilet tank and the first thing it said was to replace the toilet!  It went on to say that sometimes the bolt holding the tank to the toilet gets lose. The other issue could be that the washers need to be replaced.  First the water would have to be turned off and the toilet flushed to get the water out. The bolts would be taken off, the old washers removed, the new washers put on and the bolts put back on.  Then the water would be turned back on.

I used a wrench and was able to tighten the bolts on both sides.  So far no more leaking toilet tank!

The Dryer

It is January 27, 2017.  We bought our washer and dryer on July 6, 2016.  I found that the laundry was taking too long to dry.  The towels were taking 3 hours to dry and clothing was taking 2 hours to dry.  I phoned the dealer in town and because it’s still under warranty they would send the repairman out.  The retail clerk said it would be 3 weeks before the repairman would be back here.20160824_224538

Today is February 22, 2017.  I phoned today and they said the repairman will be here on March 2.  I was also told to turn off the breaker and put it back on.  That sometimes one of the breakers will go but not the other one.  It is a double breaker.  So the dryer ends up with half the electricity.  I said okay I will try it and let you know.   I think it has to be the element in the dryer.

Today is February 24, 2017.  I talked with the service clerk again, I was told to check the chute outside to see if it was plugged.  It has never happened that a dryer I owned would be plugged.  The chute has a grate across the bottom and it was totally plugged with lint.  I unplugged it and put it back on.  I was told it’s there so mice do not enter through the chute into the house.

Well I was happy to have the dryer working properly again.  I wish I had thought to google the problem, then I wouldn’t have wasted the electricity.

The Powder Room

Today is March 4, 2017.  I started pulled off the wallpaper in the powder room.

I hope it doesn’t take too long and I have no problems, like the last two room!

Not a lot of room to work in.

It took just over an hour to pull the wallpaper off.

I was so happy there wasn’t any problems!

20170304_123402The walls are all washed and ready to paint.  The spot on the wall is where the wallpaper must of come off and they painted over it.

I will be painted it tomorrow.

All finished!

I used a bright blue and a light grey.  I painted the ceiling as well.

Another room done

Today is February 17, 2017.  I started pulling the wallpaper off the computer room.

This is the north wall, it had one layer of wallpaper on it.  It was pretty easy to take off.  I was able to take it all off and wash it in one day.

This is the west wall, it had two layers of wallpaper on it.  The top layer was painted.  The wallpaper was quite brittle.  Some spots I was able to get big chunks off and other spots it was little bits.  I was able to get all the wallpaper off and washed in one day.

The north wall painted.

The south wall which was the most difficult wall to do.   It had one layer of wallpaper that was painted.  I tried a steam iron and fabric softener but neither of them worked.

This how the wallpaper was coming off.  There were 7 panels.

The room is finished now to put the rest of the furniture back.

Everything is back in the room.

I’m very happy the way it turned out.  This wall took 6 days to scrap the wallpaper off.
